And I thought that being afraid of your children's toys was the stuff of Chucky movies and old Twilight Zone episodes. Shows you how much I know.
We've all been so worried about lead in toys and toxic chemicals in baby bottles and struggling to figure out how to deal with it - are recall lists sufficient? - and now, apparently, the news is getting worse.
Consumer Report is now saying that there are "troubling" amounts of lead in toys that have not been recalled; their lab tests revealed "lead at widely varying levels in samples of dishware, jewelry, glue stick caps, vinyl backpacks, children's ceramic tea sets, and other toys and items not subject to recall... Additionally, the non-profit publisher found samples of a Fisher-Price blood pressure cuff that is part of a toy medical kit that had surface lead in "worrisome amounts."
Great. So if the recall lists aren't adequate, what's a parent to do? Well, for starters, it's all the more important that we share information on toys and kid's products that are locally produced with materials that can be verified safe. And we've got to stay on top of every piece of information about potential recalls or should-be-recalls that crosses our paths - forewarned is forearmed.
Keep sending us your tips and news and ideas, and we'll keep sharing, and hopefully we can get to a place where we're not afraid of our children's toys.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!

MSNBC is running a story right now about the high levels of lead in some Halloween fake/scary teeth that kids (including PunditGirl) are putting in their mouths this year.

Also, people need to check the recall lists. Join Cafemom and get the widget or get those lists in your RSS!
I just saw a wooden toy on the list, so it's not just plastic. I think people see "WOOD" and they think it's safe!

Know what scares me? The fact that all the government recalls are provoked by the testing of ONE PERSON in the CPSC. C'mon, folks, let's fund that office properly and test ALL the toys, not just what one guy can handle!

I wasn't too worried, because my kids are old enough not to suck on toys and get the lead into their system. But if it is all around us like that...? That is really frightening.
